AIOTA Certification
What is AIOTA Certification?
The All India Occupational Therapists’ Association (AIOTA) was founded in 1952 by Mrs. Kamala V. Nimbkar, also known as Elizabeth Lundy. She served as the Founder President until 1959. AIOTA was instrumental in the establishment of the World Federation of Occupational Therapists (WFOT) in 1952, being one of its Founder Council Members. Mrs. Nimbkar registered AIOTA under the Bombay Public Trust Act on June 29, 1955.
Under Mrs. Nimbkar’s leadership, the Occupational Therapy Center the first OT School in India and Asia offering a Diploma Program was inaugurated on November 14, 1950, at K.E.M. Hospital in Mumbai. The program received accreditation from AIOTA in 1952 and approval from WFOT in 1954. Students from various countries in Asia, such as Sri Lanka, Malaya, and Indonesia, were trained at this center, contributing to the dissemination of Occupational Therapy in the region.
Mrs. Nimbkar attended the first WFOT Council Meeting in Edinburgh in 1954 as the WFOT Delegate from India. After retiring from the Occupational Therapy School in Bombay in 1957, she established the second School of Occupational Therapy at the Government Medical College & Hospital in Nagpur in 1958.
AIOTA continues to organize annual national conferences to update members on recent advances and research in occupational therapy. The first national conference was organized by Mrs. Nimbkar in 1953 in Mumbai.
Under her guidance, The Indian Journal of Occupational Therapy (IJOT) was established as the official publication of AIOTA in 1956. The IJOT has evolved into a peer-reviewed journal indexed in various national and international databases, focusing on publishing original scientific research papers, case reports, and preliminary articles on all aspects of Occupational Therapy. It was registered in 1957 with the Office of the Registrar of Newspapers of India, with Mrs. Nimbkar as its first Editor.
