CSA W47.1 is a Canadian Standards Association (CSA) certification that sets out the requirements for companies performing fusion welding of steel structures. Rather than certifying individual welders alone, it focuses on the entire company’s capability, ensuring that they operate with qualified personnel, approved welding procedures, and a quality management system. Administered solely by the Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB), the certification ensures welded steel products meet safety, strength, and consistency standards essential for construction and infrastructure.

Under CSA W47.1, companies must have a certified Welding Engineer, responsible for overall compliance, and Welding Supervisors, who directly oversee welding operations. Welders and welding operators must also pass qualification tests covering different weld types, such as fillet and groove welds. In addition, companies are required to develop and maintain detailed Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and Welding Procedure Data Sheets (WPDS) to ensure process consistency and compliance.

This certification is mandatory for structural steel welding projects in Canada, especially those related to buildings, bridges, or public infrastructure. It is increasingly sought after by companies in the U.S. and other regions to demonstrate superior welding quality and adherence to recognized international standards. The CWB conducts regular audits and welder requalification testing, reinforcing the ongoing quality control required under CSA W47.1.

The Omnibus Technical Regulation (OTR), 2024 is a new safety regulation introduced by the Ministry of Heavy Industries to ensure that all types of machinery and electrical equipment — including their assemblies, components, and parts — meet specific safety and quality standards before being placed in the Indian market. This regulation is closely linked to the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and specifically falls under Scheme X Certification, which is designed for high-risk products that require a more detailed compliance process. Under Scheme X, manufacturers must go through rigorous testing, factory inspections, and ongoing monitoring to ensure that their products consistently meet the required Indian standards. The goal is to enhance consumer safety, promote quality manufacturing, and align with global best practices. The OTR serves as the framework that mandates this certification, making BIS Scheme X a legal requirement for covered products from August 28, 2025 onwards.
